Year Running: 2016/2017
Credit level: F5
Additional Information   EMPTY

Description

A survey course of the political, social, economic and cultural dimensions of Japan's emergence into modernity. Lectures will provide a thematic overview in a chronological fashion to address such overarching questions as why Japan was the only non-Western country to emerge as modern world power by the twentieth century and what this transformation meant for Japan and its neighbors. Seminar discussions will engage Japanese primary source material in English translation to understand Japan in its own voices before placing its experiences in the broader context of world history.
